16 'Ndrangheta convictions near Rome (ANSA) – Rome, October 22 – A court in Velletri near Rome on Tuesday handed down sentences totalling 190 years on 16 members of the Calabria-based ‘Ndrangheta mafia.

It was one of the first ‘Ndrangheta trials in the province of Rome.

The 16 were found guilty of racketeering and drug trafficking.

‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s richest mafia because of its hold on the European cocaine market, has spread from Calabria to other parts of Italy and is active in the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, France and eastern Europe.

A recent estimate put its turnover in Italy as equivalent to 3% of Italian GDP.
