Alfano calls for justice reform after Berlusconi ouster

Alfano calls for justice reform after Berlusconi ouster (see related) (ANSA) – Rome, November 27 – Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano called for justice reform Wednesday after three-time premier Silvio Berlusconi was voted out of the Senate over a tax-fraud conviction. “Justice reform must not be omitted from the government’s agenda,” said Alfano. Alfano, from the New Center Right (NCD) party, was appealing to his coalition partners from the center-left Democratic Party (PD), which made up the largest group in the Senate backing Berlusconi’s ouster. “It’s an ugly day for parliament in Italy,” he added. Alfano had long been touted as Berlusconi’s heir apparent until he and supporters broke ranks to form the NCD, vowing to support the government, unlike Berlusconi, whose resurrected Forza Italia party opposes it.
