Eni says beleaguered gas terminal in Libya still operating
(Updates previous) (ANSA) – Rome, November 6 – A major natural gas terminal in Libya operated by Italian energy giant Eni continues to function despite threats by armed protesters in the area, the company said Wednesday.
Although the Mellitah plant is under threat, as is the Greenstream pipeline to Sicily, both are still operating, Eni said.
Earlier in the day, the company said that despite the unrest it did not expect “supply problems” for Italy.
Eni chief executive Paolo Scaroni earlier warned that protesters were threatening to cut supplies.
The protesters from Libya’s minority Amazigh Berber ethnic group are demanding government attention to cultural and minority issues.
The Mellitah terminal, which is jointly run by Eni and the Libyan National Oil Company, is an important link in exporting natural gas from Libya to Italy.
