Italy to tone down Republic Day
P(ANSA) – Rome, May 2 – Italy will once again tone down festivities marking the founding of the Italian republic next month.BROn Friday the office of President Giorgio Napolitano said the presidential palace would skip a traditional reception on June 1, the day before Republic Day, for institutional authorities and foreign diplomats “for reasons of simplicity and respect in this moment of socio-economic crisis”.BRLast year the government nearly scrapped festivities altogether amid recession and tough austerity cuts.BRRepublic Day is June 2, the anniversary of Italy’s vote to abolish the monarchy and pursue a democracy in 1946 after the fall of Fascism.BR/P
