Re: Calcite from unknown locality
Hi Don this is a very characteristic and very typical Calcite from an abandoned clay quarry in Ilsfeld, Landkreis (County) Heilbronn, state of Baden-W?rttemberg, Germany. Ilsfeld is spelled with an “s” ; your “Ilfeld” is a very famous mineral locality in the Harz mountains and is spelled without “s”. The locality which you got seems to be mislabelled. There are no such calcites in Ilfeld (Harz). This has been confirmed by some of the most experienced Harz (e.g. Ilfeld) collectors in Germany. To allow you to compare yr. specimen with another one from Ilsfeld, pls. refer to the link at the German Mineral Atlas website: http://www.mineralienatlas.de/?l=8008. By the way: In Germany, such calcites are called ” landscape calcites”. Cheers Peter Seroka
