Bakers give pope gigantic handmade panettone
(ANSA) – Rome, December 11 – A delegation of bakers on Wednesday gave Pope Francis a handmade, five-kilo panettone, or traditional Italian Christmas cake.
The cupola-shaped, fluffy cylindrical cake flavored with candied orange, citron, lemon zest, and raisins is very labor-intensive, and takes several days to make properly.
“It was a great honor to be able to meet the Holy Father and make him a gift of the fruit of our labor,” said delegation leader Orazio Albanesi. “We assured the pontiff that we will always strive to unite Christian values to our daily work, so that it will always give the best possible results”.
