Confidence vote possible next week says Napolitano

Confidence vote possible next week says Napolitano (ANSA) – Rome, December 2 – A confidence vote in Enrico Letta’s new, smaller government is possible as soon as next week, President Giorgio Napolitano said after consulting with the premier Monday.

Napolitano said Letta would set the date after talks with the Speakers of the two houses of parliament.

Letta has said he would like to hold the vote after the primaries of his Democratic Party (PD) on December 8.

The PD is in a coalition with the New Centre Right (NCD), a party that split with Silvio Berlusconi over the ex-premier’s recent ouster from the Senate after a tax-fraud conviction.

It has a much smaller majority without Berlusconi’s newly revived Forza Italia (FI) party but pundits say it is more solid.
