Couple sues over alleged embryo switch

P(ANSA) – Rome, April 15 – A couple who believes their embryos may have been switched by mistake with those of another couple in a Rome fertility clinic are suing, judicial sources said Tuesday.BRThe alleged switch took place on December 4, when four women were scheduled to have viable embryos implanted. Three of them became pregnant as a result of the procedure and the fourth expressed deep concerns.BR”If the embryos were mine then obviously the children are mine as well. I couldn’t live with the idea that children of mine are growing up somewhere in Italy,” the fourth, a 36-year-old Rome woman, told local newspapers.BR”We were four aspiring mothers. The others are pregnant and I’m not,” said the woman.BR”If the switch happened between two of the pregnant women, they can also switch their babies after they’re born,” she added. “What can I give in return? I don’t care what the law says – if the embryos are mine, I want those babies”.BRHospital authorities denied such mistakes could happen, and urged couples in their care to check through DNA testing if they have any doubts.BR”This would not be a screening for possible errors made, but for the sake of transparency,” Massimo Giovannini, who directs the maternal and infant division overseeing the hospital in question, told La Repubblica newspaper.BR/P
