Derailed train engine back on the tracks

Work commenced in the morning to remove the train from the tracks and preparations were completed to raise the engine onto a large barge in the Liguria-region town in northwestern Italy. PThe Italian rail network RFI has said it would cost about two and a half million euros for the setting up of a large platform with five 800-tonne cranes, the securing of the side and structural repairs for the tracks, as well as the likely loss of the heavily damaged engine. Additional costs were sustained by Trenitalia due to revenue losses and the cost of buses substituting the train routes. RFI Managing Director Michele Mario Elia noted the difficulty of the operation, saying that ”this is the first time we’ve ever tried such a thing.” After being hoisted back onto the rails, the derailed engine and wagon will be towed away by a locomotive.
