Downed Missoni plane brought to surface off Venezuela
(ANSA) – Caracas, November 25 – Venezuelan authorities told ANSA Monday they have removed from the Atlantic Ocean the remains of the aircraft that was carrying the party that included Italian fashion designer Vittorio Missoni when it crashed in January. The missing plane was found in June, launching an effort to bring it to the surface in order to establish whether the accident was caused by human error or technical malfunction.
The group, which included Missoni’s wife, two other passengers and two pilots, was travelling to Caracas after holiday on an island in the Los Roques Caribbean archipelago.
The Los Roques area is notorious for plane crashes.
In 2008 another small plane returning to the Venezuelan mainland from the archipelago disappeared with 14 people aboard, including eight Italians.
Missoni was the eldest son of Ottavio Missoni, the founder of the company famous for its colourful zig-zag knitwear who died in May.
