In Conegliano, outside Venice, morticians were commissioned by the 55-year-old to make the precious gem from the body of his 20-year-old son, who died in a traffic accident. The owner of the funeral home, Silvia Zanardo, said the client learned of the process from a Swiss funeral home. “He was so struck by it that he asked if I could make his sons remains ‘eternal’, which were cremated and buried,” she told local daily Il Gazzettino. After exhuming the remains, Zanardo shipped them to the same funeral home in Switzerland to have them made into a diamond. “A few months later we gave it to him and he was overcome with emotion,” she said. The cost of the process ranges from 3,500 to 13,000 euros.
