Four arrested in 1993 execution of mafia man who wanted out
(ANSA) – Caserta, November 18 – A Naples judge ordered the arrest Monday of four people accused of killing a fellow mafia clansman in 1993 for trying to distance himself from the crime group.
Only one of the four – the accused gunman – was not already in prison.
Anti-mafia investigators believe Domenico Motti was killed 20 years ago in Carinaro, a town between Naples and Caserta, for wanting out of the Casalesi clan of the Neapolitan Camorra mafia. Casalesi underboss Francesco Bidognetti, nicknamed ‘Midnight Fatty’ in local dialect, ordered the killing of his underling to remind the rest of the Bidognetti clan that membership was for life, investigators said.
The Bidognetti clan is one of five subclans of the Casalesi. The Casalesi clan was headed at the time by ruthless superboss Francesco ‘Sandokan’ Schiavone. Bidognetti was Schiavone’s chief lieutenant. Both are currently serving life sentences without possibility of parole.
The arrests were made with the help of testimony from a former trusted friend of Motti’s who turned State-informer.
The former friend confessed to taking part in the execution plot but was not charged.
Motti’s friend said he was assigned the task of luring the victim to a location on the pretext of an appointment.
When Motti showed up, he was ambushed, shot dead with a 7.65 caliber gun.
The accused gunman, Luigi Coscione, was arrested Monday at his home while the others implicated in the plot were already serving jail sentences.
