Four Camorra mafia jailed for up to seven years
(ANSA) – Caserta, October 28 – Four members of the Casalesi clan of the Camorra mafia were sentenced Monday to jail terms ranging up to seven years on charges including extortion and belonging to a criminal gang.
The four belong to the Casalesi gang headed by Michele Zagaria and were convicted of extorting money from businesses including the owner of a well-known dairy based in Capua that produces buffalo mozzarella for export around the world, as well as a trucking company.
A civil case has also been brought by the businesses involved, as well as environmental group Fai and an anti-mafia group based in the area around the city of Caserta.
Those convicted included two mobsters named Michele Fontana, one 43 years old who was sentenced to seven years in jail; and the other 42 years and handed a jail term of six years and four months; Luigi Diana, sentenced to four years and four months; and Luciano Fontana, sentenced to four years and eight months.
The Camorra mafia clan was exposed by writer and anti-mafia campaigner Roberto Saviano, who has been under round-the-clock police protection since his 2006 book Gomorrah brought down death threats from the Casalesi.
Gomorrah was turned into a 2008 film that won second prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
