The bill passed with 160 votes in favour and 133 against. PIt now returns to the Lower House after being amended in the Senate./PPThe legislation is part of Renzi’s reforms to reduce the cost of Italy’s political system and make the country easier to govern. A separate bill to change the Constitution will be needed to abolish the provincial governments completely./PPPutting the bill to a confidence vote obliged supporters of Renzi to approve it or risk toppling the government./PPOther planned measures meant to streamline government include a bill to eventually strip the Senate of its lawmaking ability, leaving that role to the Lower House./P
