House Speaker to meet woman attacked by acid

(ANSA) – Urbino, November 29 – Italian House Speaker Laura Boldrini said Friday she was looking forward to meeting Lucia Annibali, a woman attacked with acid by two hitmen hired by her ex-boyfriend.

Annibali, a lawyer, was attacked in April near her home in Pesaro, off the central Adriatic coast. The attackers waited inside her home and ambushed her when she set foot inside.

Despite her injuries, Annibali managed to call for help and give the police promising leads for the investigation.

She has since been outspoken against domestic abuse. Annibali was honoured Monday, on the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, by President Giorgio Napolitano, who gave her the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. “I am very happy to meet Annibali,” Boldrini said. Boldrini made the comments at the inauguration ceremony of the Carlo Bo university academic year.
