‘Italy must do more to protect kids’-STC

P(ANSA) – Rome, April 9 – Italy must do more to protect its young from online sexual predators, international NGO Save the Children said Wednesday.BRThe children’s rights organization cited recent data showing that in Italy, some 32% of teenagers are willing to give their cell phone number to strangers online, and 27% agree to meet in person with strangers who contact them on the Internet. “Authorities must not underestimate the gravity and the dangerousness of this phenomenon,” said Save the Children Italy Program Director Raffaela Milano.BR”While Italy has updated its laws, on a practical level the protection of minors from these kinds of risks is still too weak”. The NGO said Italy must do more on four specific fronts: schools must include online-safety education in their curricula, law enforcement must be trained and updated, companies and social networks need to be more vigilant, and finally, both short- and long-term support for minors who fall victim to sexual exploitation on the Internet must be put in place.BR/P
