Italy to introduce jobless benefit

Italy to introduce jobless benefit (ANSA) – Rome, November 26 – Italy will introduce a jobless benefit with the 2014 budget, officials said Tuesday.

A “minimum guaranteed income” for job-seekers, the unemployed and laid-off will be funded by lowering the ceiling on public-sector so-called ‘golden pensions’ from 150,000 to 90,000 euros, Cabinet Secretary Giovanni Legnini said.

He did not say how much the benefit might amount to.

In another move to help the victims of Italy’s longest recession in 20 years, the government is to earmark 40 million euros for a ‘social inclusion support’ fund, Labour Minister Enrico Giovannini said.

The budget is moving through parliament on confidence votes – the first will come Tuesday night – and is expected to be approved before Christmas.
