Morricone writes piece to honour Lampedusa dead
(ANSA) – Milan, October 21 – Ennio Morricone, one of the film world’s most influential composers and an Italian legend, has written a piece in honour of the victims of the shipwreck earlier this month near Lampedusa.
“The Voice of the Submerged” will debut on November 2 in Milan’s Santa Maria Incoronata church in memory of more than 360 people drowned in the sinking of an over-crowded boat ferrying immigrants from Syra, Somalia and Eritrea to Europe.
The ship caught fire and sank on Oct. 3 with about 155 passengers rescued.
The tragedy has triggered calls for greater European Union involvement in stopping human trafficking in the Mediterranean and providing greater assistance to immigrants.
“The dead cannot sing, we must honour their memory,” said Morricone, adding his “very sad music” will be performed in memory of “all those who lie at the bottom of the Mediterranean sea”.
Morricone, popular for his work on Italy’s famous spaghetti western genre of films, has won numerous awards for his work including an Academy Honorary Award at the 2007 Oscars.
