MPs call on interior minister to explain Mafia comments

MPs call on interior minister to explain Mafia comments (ANSA) – Rome, December 4 – Democratic Party (PD) MPs on Wednesday called on Interior Minister Angelino Alfano to explain his statements yesterday that the Mafia could be embarking on a new campaign of violence targeting State officials and the public in general.

”Italy is at risk of a new season of massacres? If so the minister must inform lawmakers and citizens. These are extremely serious allegations, which must be clarified on the floor of parliament”, said MPs Michele Anzaldi, Donatella Ferranti, Danilo Leva and Walter Verini in a statement.

”If the information can be made public, Parliament must be told. If the information is classified, the minister must explain how it got divulged”.

Alfano mentioned during an official visit Tuesday in Palermo that organized crime may be ”tempted” to revert to its 1990s strategy of taking officials out with car bombings.

His visit to the Sicilian capital follows a November 13 newspaper report that former Cosa Nostra Mafia ”boss of bosses” Toto’ Riina shouted for the death of deputy prosecutor Nino Di Matteo from his prison cell as he watched video of an ongoing Palermo trial into secret negotiations between the Italian State and the Mafia two decades ago.

”Di Matteo must die”, Riina shouted, according to a guard quoted by La Repubblica newspaper.

Riina, known as The Beast, is in a maximum-security prison in Milan for crimes including ordering the 1992-1993 car-bomb slayings of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Alfano said Tuesday the government will boost security for prosecutors and give Di Matteo a bomb jammer to prevent remote-controlled devices being detonated at a distance.
