Pannella stable in intensive care
P(ANSA) – Rome, April 23 – Veteran political campaigner Marco Pannella, the leader of Italy’s Radical Party, spent a quiet night at Rome’s Gemelli hospital Tuesday following surgery to repair his abdominal aorta. The 83-year-old was said to be in a stable condition in intensive care on Wednesday morning. Doctors were due to issue a new progress report later in the day. Pannella was at the forefront of the battles to legalise divorce and abortion in Italy. He has endangered own his health with several hunger strikes in recent years to demand action on issues such as prison overcrowding.BROn Tuesday, messages of support and for a rapid recovery poured in from across the political spectrum.BRPresident Giorgio Napolitano also sent his best wishes “to my friend Marco”.BR/P
