Pope meets around 50 child Rett syndrome sufferers

Pope meets around 50 child Rett syndrome sufferers (ANSA) – Vatican City, November 27 – Pope Francis met a group of around 50 children suffering Rett syndrome, a severe neurodevelopmental brain disorder, and their parents at the Vatican on Wednesday.

The Argentine pontiff greeted and stroked the children in what Vatican Radio described as a “simple, moving” encounter, before reciting an Ave Maria and giving a blessing.

The meeting took place before the pope’s chilly general audience with around 50,000 faithful in St Peter’s Square.

Francis wrapped up well for the audience, wearing a thick coat and scarf.
