Pres says reforms to refresh politics

P(ANSA) – Rome, April 11 – Italian Premier Giorgio Napolitano on Friday emphasized the importance of institutional reforms for the sake of “bringing back citizens to politics”. Speaking to a convention of the New Center Right (NCD) party, Napolitano’s remarks were seen as a recognition of the country’s disenfranchisement with traditional party politics in the run-up to European elections next month, where anti-establishment parties like the 5-Star Movement are expected to do well. Meanwhile Renzi is pushing through sweeping reforms to revive the Italian economy, which is weak after emerging from its longest postwar recession last year, and overhaul the country’s costly and slow-moving political system. The premier’s three-year blueprint – the Economic and Financial Document (DEF) – approved Tuesday by the cabinet, includes plans for annual income-tax cuts of 10 billion euros targeting low earners, a cap on wages of top public-sector managers and higher capital-gains tax for banks.BR/P
