San Paolo foundation head says he will quit on Monday
(ANSA) – Turin, October 24 – The president of the foundation that controls Italy’s second-largest bank, Sergio Chiamparino, said Thursday that he will hand in his resignation to its general council at a meeting set for Monday.
Chiamparino said that he learned he is under investigation for events in the period when he served as mayor of the industrial city of Turin.
“I am absolutely calm and ready to cooperate with the judiciary, convinced as I am that (I) had always tried to pursue the general interest of the city,” said Chiamparino.
He said he would step aside to avoid causing any damage to the reputation of the Compagnia di San Paolo which is the largest single shareholder of Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s second-largest bank following Unicredit Group.
For that reason, the directors of the foundation may not accept his resignation, sources told ANSA.
