Two arrests in Verona pigsty vendetta

P(ANSA) – Verona, April 16 – A gang of men near Verona are accused of trying to settle a dispute by throwing a man into a pigsty, forcing him to make animal noises under threat of a knife, and locking him into a fenced area to set attack dogs on him, investigators said Wednesday.BRThe man reported escaping by climbing the roof of a dog house, scrambling over the fence and finding refuge under a haystack, where he hid for an hour before seeking the help of his father, who called police.BRTwo ethnic Roma have been arrested on charges of criminal coercion, extortion and kidnapping.BRThree others are under investigation.BRAccording to a reconstruction, the incident began March 8, when members of one group appeared at the home of two members of a rival group, saying they wanted to settle an offense, the nature of which investigators have not made known. The two young men were taken by car to a field. One of the alleged aggressors, an Italian of Sinti origin, reportedly pointed a pistol at the head of one of the young men and pretended to wash his ”shame” with a 500 euro payment. The victim was then taken to an automated banking machine, but was unable to withdraw the money demanded for lack of funds.BRThe other young man was thrown into a hole dug in a pigsty, among animal bones, and made to believe he would be let to die. Then, under the threat of a knife and a broken bottle, the kidnappers forced the victim to cry like a rooster and bark like a dog before throwing him into a dog enclosure, from which he escaped when he saw they were about to let loose two rottweilers on him.BR/P
