Vatican to mediate Venezuela crisis

P(ANSA) – Caracas, April 9 – Venezuela on Wednesday formally invited the Vatican to mediate in talks with the opposition after two months of the worst violence the country has witnessed in 10 years. President Nicolas Maduro’s government invited Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, a former envoy to Venezuela, to act as a “good faith witness” in dialogue agreed to after protests in which dozens have been killed. Talks are set to commence Thursday in Caracas, Vatican officials said, with current Vatican envoy, Aldo Giordano, reportedly scheduled to attend as well. Hoping to provoke a ‘Venezuelan Spring,’ demonstrators took to the streets in February over the country’s goods shortages, skyrocketing inflation, and crime rates that compete with those of the most violent countries in the world.BR/P
